Sunday 30th September 2007 - Grosvenor XI - Home

Grosvenor XI 208 for 3 – Snitterfield CC 113 for 8  Sunday 30th September 2007

The annual Malcolm Steele Memorial Trophy match hosted by Snitterfield CC for the second year, saw the former Alveston CC veterans cruise to a comfortable win over the home side, thanks in the main to a delightfully accomplished innings from P. Jaggard reaching 89 not out, well supported by P. Havers who produced a solid 65 before being caught by Booth off the bowling of Payne.

Despite the best efforts of the Snitterfield attack, seam, swing or spin offered nothing that Jaggard and Havers couldn’t deal with. Earlier, Yendall trapped J. Collins LBW for 14 and young T. Havers was unfortunately caught by Lamb off the bowling of Williams for a duck.  “Jacko” Jackson finished not out on 13.

Not only did Snitterfield miss the contribution of regular stalwart Tim ‘Teflon Turncoat’ Hartwell as part of their attack, they were forced to witness his best performance of the season with the ball, as he batted for the other side - so to speak!  Returning figures of 3 for 26 off 6, he knocked over the Snipe’s openers Yendall and Payne for 6 runs. Thierry Richards made a welcomed first appearance of the season with a fine display behind the stumps demonstrating that despite the best efforts of Wyllie, Leefe and Kumarasinghe, he has been sorely missed. Same cannot be said for his batting as he was caught and bowled by - yes you guessed it - that Hartwell chap!.

Nick Lamb in at 3 steadied the ship for the home side, going on to produce a solid 44 before falling to Jackson.  Hillier added 21 before also falling to Jackson, and the only other noteworthy contribution came from Beesley who was 20 not out when the overs ran out. Wickets from McBride and Dowling contributed to the home side’s demise.

Jaggard was declared Man of the Match for a magical display with his willow wand.

Sunday 23rd September 2007 - Stockton CC - Home

Stockton 174 All Out off 38 overs - Snitterfield 147 All Out off 37 overs.

A competitive match ended in victory for a talented Stockton side showing their league pedigree, but not before Leefe contributed a season best 67 runs for the Snipes.

Good work with the ball and in the field enabled Snitterfield to contain the visitors to 174. Sharples 46 and Ward 41 the best of the Stockton batting. A fine 3 for 20 from Payne, 3 for 26 from Hartwell and 2 for 17 from Yendall the best of the Snipes bowling, supported by some fine catches from Payne, Visser and Hartwell in the field.

A useful 26 from Yendall the only other batting of note as the Snipes defence collapsed - an all too familiar sight this season. Honours pretty much shared among the Stockton bowlers, although Sharples 5 overs, 3 maidens, 2 wickets for 3 runs is well worth a mention.

Sunday 16th September 2007 - Rowington CC - Home

Snitterfield 90 All Out off 30.2 overs - Rowington 92 for 7 off 28 overs.

A day for the bowlers with both sides keeping the opposition down to around 3 runs an over in a very low scoring match.

Only the dependable Leefe 23 and improving Hillier 20, were able to offer any resistance with the bat for Snitterfield, as the Rowington attack skittled them out in the 31st over. Chin and Sly the pick of the visitors bowling.

2 for 8 from Yendall and 2 for 16 from Hillier made a hole in the Rowington batting, with wickets apiece from Wyllie, Payne and Linford. The visitor's top score of the day a 16 not out from Pickering, who saw his side home in the 28 over.

Sunday 9th September 2007 - Wellesbourne CC - Home

Snitterfield 173 All Out off 39 overs - Wellesbourne 174 for 6 off 36.5 overs.

An 87 not out by B. Purser was the foundation of an exciting fightback by the ever improving young Wellesbourne side, as they chased Snitterfield's total of 173.

Electing to bat first, the Snipes lost openers Yendall and Leefe cheaply and had to wait for Jackson in at 6 to add a double figure tally before falling. The one bright note of the Snitterfield innings was a delightful 52 not out from Mackay who continues to improve with the bat.

Wellesbourne's dangerman Killian returned figures of 7 overs, 1 maiden, 3 wickets for 15.

When opening bowler Richards dismissed Wellesbourne opener R. Purser for 8, Snitterfield could be forgiven for thinking it was to be their day. However the 87 not out and a solid 26 from Husselby put the visitors in the driving seat despite good work with the ball and in the field.

Yendall's 2 for 17 off 4 the pick of the Snipe attack with wickets apiece for Hillier, Mackay and Jackson.

Sunday 2nd September 2007 - Norton Lindsey CC - Home

Norton Lindsey 181 All Out off 35.5 overs - Snitterfield 116 for All Out off 30.2 overs.

Once again Snitterfield managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as their performance with the bat was unable to match that with the ball and in the field.

Having dismissed a talented Norton side with overs to spare, only Yendall 38, Leefe 20 and Payne 12 Not Out were able to show any meaningful contributions with the bat.

Norton's attack was centred around Dewar who closed the day with 8 overs, 2 maidens, 5 wickets for 13 runs, while with the bat 7 of the Norton side reached double-figures, Walter and Warner top-scoring with 27 apiece.

Hartwell 3 for 22, Payne 2 for 8 and Hillier 2 for 29 the pick of the Snipe bowlers.

Sunday 12th August 2007 - Bards CC - Home

Bards 116 for 7 - Snitterfield 117 for 6 off 37.4 overs.

Snitterfield returned to winning ways thanks to a solid performance with both bat and ball, in a closely fought match at Snitterfield's Wolverton Road ground.

A typically frugal opening spell of bowling from Mackay supported well by Hartwell, kept the Bards opening pair of Russon and ! Lythall to 3 runs an over until Russon fell in the 6th over, bowled by Hartwell for 6. Yendall replaced MacKay and was rewarded when he trapped Harris LBW for 15. Hillier dismissed danger-man I Lythall for 38, having had him dropped earlier on the boundary and partner Richards was rewarded when Kumarasinghe held on to a catch to dismiss Shore for 0.

Pick of the Snitterfield attack was Visser who returned an impressive 3 for 7 off his spell of 5 overs, clean bowling Yates 20, Rathkey 13 and Landucci 4. A tight performance in the field and by skipper Wyllie behind the stumps, supported the bowlers well and enabled them to contain Bards to just 116 off their 40 over innings.

With the bat, Yendall and Kumarasinghe set the tone of the reply, with a sensible, measured innings of 26 and 23 respectively which kept the Snipes just ahead of the run-rate required. Kumarasinghe was first to fall in the 18th over followed by Jackson and Wyllie cheaply, then Yendall in the 24th, but a gritty defence from Beesley and a controlled 22 from Lamb set-up the win which MacKay and Visser secured in the 38th over.

Sunday 5th August 2007 - Harbury CC - Away

Harbury 226 for 7 - Snitterfield 181 for 8

In what seemed the first idyllic cricket match weather of the summer, Snitterfield CC lost a competitive encounter away at Harbury by 45 runs.

Home side openers Newport and Russell got off to a fine start despite solid spells with the ball from Yendall, Hartwell and Visser. MacKay deserved more from his 7 overs than 0 for 26 but partner Kumarasinghe finally made the breakthrough midway through the home side’s innings, dismissing Newport for 61 and Russell for 51 during his 7 overs.

No.3 bat S Muggleston added a valuable 39 until bowled by Richards. Beesley and Jackson took a wicket apiece and Visser was rewarded when he returned for a final over, bowling Carr for 0 and having keeper Wyllie stump J.Newport for 1.

Snitterfield made a steady start with the bat as openers Yendall and Kumarasinghe put on 47 runs until out in successive overs. Jackson joined Beesley at the crease and added a solid 25 before falling caught behind, while Beesley weedled and nurdled for 40 deliveries until finally getting off the mark with a single.

A not uncommon lower order collapse saw the visitors lose 4 wickets in 9 overs adding just 23 to the total when skipper Wyllie added a quickfire 47 in a 59 run partnership with Beesley. Alas all too late as the overs ran out 45 runs short.

For the home side attack, G Russell matched his performance with the bat with figures of 3 for 15 off 8, and there were wickets apiece for J Newport, G Neal, M Boneham and P Muggleston.

Sunday 27th July 2007 - Rowington CC - Away

Rowington 181 for 9 - Snitterfield 76 All Out

For the second match in succession Snitterfield managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Having bowled and fielded well to contain Rowington to 181 on their small outfield, another poor showing with the bat saw them skittled out for a lowly 76.

A good opening spell from MacKay cleared out the home side openers for 6 apiece then at the first change Yendall bowled danger man Sly for 53. Despite a few chances dropped in the field including a couple of difficult takes on the boundary, Snitterfield fielded well and Kumarasinghe kept wicket well letting only 3 byes through. A fine 2 for 10 from Beesley and 1 apiece from Hillier, Visser, Booth and young Harry Cox kept the home side's runs down to a gettable target.

Snitterfield openers Yendall and Kumarasinghe looked to get off to a good start pushing the scoredboard along at the target rate until Yendall was caught on 15, followed three overs later by Kumarasinghe, bowled for 17. A useful 13 was added by Tim Cox but the rest of the scoring was poor and the home side bagged the win in the 30th over.

Sunday 8th July 2007 - Bidford CC - Away

Bidford 106 All Out - Snitterfield 50 All Out

Snitterfield's run of Sunday successes came crashing to an end when they were skittled out for a miserly 50 at Bidford.

Bowling first on a poor batting track, the 10 man Snipes team were delighted to clean-out the home side in the 35th over with just 106 on the board. 2 wickets apiece for skipper Wyllie and Yendall, 3 for 19 off 4 from Hillier and an excellent 3 for 0 off 4 from MacKay doing the damage.

However, Snitterfield's delight at the interval was short lived as the home side attack went one better and dismissed the Snipes for 50 in the 18th over. A trio of ducks, a calamitous run-out and some pretty poor shots all round made certain of the trouncing, with only Lamb unbeaten on 14 able to make the short walk back to the pavilion with his head high.

Sunday 17th June 2007 - Wellesbourne - Away

Wellesbourne 157 for 8 - Snitterfield 208 for 6

Snitterfield continued their winning ways with victory against a mainly youthful Wellesbourne side who show great promise for the future.

Batting first, Snitterfield's opening pairing of Leefe and Kumarasinghe reached 57 before Kumarasinghe fell to Rothwell for 15 in the 13th over. Leefe batted on to complete a solid 36, while Visser, Beesley and Wyllie ticked the scoreboard over for Jackson to reach his 20. A stylish knock of 51 from Yendall, well supported by 37 from Wood, saw the visitor's total reach 208. Rothwell was the pick of the home side's attack with 3 for 14 off 6, ably supported by his young team mates Purser, Mole and Vadaz.

Wellesbourne's opening pair of Woods and Mole looked to be settling in against the Snitterfield openers when Woods was forced to retire after aggravating a knee injury picked up the previous week. Mole went on to reach 17 before falling to the spin of Hartwell, who afforded both sides several moments of mirth during the match, performing his famous Mr Teflon routine with the ball.

Purser came in at 3 and went on to complete an outstanding 73 runs against solid Snitterfield bowling; the conditions providing movement on and off the wicket for both spinners and seamers. He lasted until the final over when he edged an out-swinger from Richards to Kumarasinghe at mid-wicket. The middle-order fell to Kumarasinghe who finished with 3 for 6 off 4 overs assisted with some smart catching from Beesley, but Rothwell added a useful 29 before falling to an excellent catch from Holyoake at deep mid-on off the bowling of man of the match Yendall.

Wood and Richards added further wickets and Wellesbourne finished 51 runs short on 157.

Sunday 10th June 2007 - Ashorne & Morton Morrell - Away

Ashorne & Morton Morrell 96 for 8 - Snitterfield 144 all out

Snitterfield's bowlers rescued the side in an unlikely victory at Ashorne on Sunday - making it three wins on the bounce.

After losing the toss Snitterfield were put in on a pitch that looked lively, and started with a flourish of boundaries with openers Richard Yendall and Krish Kurimasinge scoring well on the small ground. Kurimasinge fell first for 21 with Jackson, in at number 3 following shortly for 8.

Opener Yendall scored a useful 31 and Andy Currall once again steadied the ship with a watchful 30. Skipper Wyllie added 15 before 3 wickets fell on the trot - all for ducks! No names mentioned, but you know who you are! A cavalier 22 from veteran Hiller pushed Snitterfield to 144 all out.

Snitterfield had their work cut out defending their small total but each bowler rose to the occasion and bowled well from the very first over.

The tone was set with an aggressive opening spell from Currall 7-3-11-2, and the usually miserly spell from Hartwell 8-1-16-0. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals with Booth 5-0-20-1, Wood 5-2-4-2, Hillier 5-0-14-01 and Holyoake swinging the ball both ways for a season best 5-1-13-2, containing Ashorne to just 96-8 from the 40 overs.

Sunday 3rd June 2007 - Darlingscote - Home

Snitterfield 162 for 9 - Darlingscote 67 all out

Snitterfield reaped the rewards for accurate bowling on Sunday, beating visitors Darlingscote by 95 runs.

Darlingscote won the toss and asked Snitterfield to bat first on a slow low pitch. Snitterfield set a competitive total of 162 with opener Richard Yendall scoring 31, Andy Currall 45 after a careful start and Krish Kumarasinghe adding 24 with the tail. Darlingscote bowler Dudfield claimed 4 victims for 52 runs at the end of the Snitterfield innings.

In the first over of the Darlingscote innings 2 wickets fell to Tim Hartwell's deceptively floated off-spin. Apart from D Treadwell's 41 runs, the Darlingscote batsmen struggled to generate momentum against the accurate bowling of the Snitterfield attack. After effecting a run out off Wyllie's bowling, Neil Jackson went on to take his first wicket for the club. Then Lee Hillier destroyed any chance of a Darlingscote fight back by taking 3 wickets in 3 overs for 7 runs. To complete a man of the match performance Andy Currall took the final wicket with his first delivery with Darlingscote 67 all out.

Sunday 20th May 2007 - Ashorne & Morton Morrell - Home

Snitterfield 185 for 8 - Ashorne & Morton Morrell 172 for 7

Snitterfield recorded their first victory of the current season, at the third time of asking in a tight game against an evenly matched Ashorne & Morton Morrell side. After losing the toss (again!) Snitterfield were put in to bat on a damp pitch which favoured the bowling side, and Ashorne made an early breakthrough having young Wood caught behind for 0. This brought 'Auz' Booth to the crease and he and opener Leefe then put on 107 for the second wicket, Booth finishing with 64 and Leefe 33. Two quick wickets from G Jones bought skipper Wyllie to the crease who added a quick fire 45 with sterling support from Jean Visser on debut with 25 not out, leaving Snitterfield 185–8.

Snitterfield started well in the field with opener J Jones caught brilliantly at first slip by the youthful Beasley off the bowling of Wyllie. Ashorne scored steadily against Hillier before he was rewarded by trapping Husselby lbw for 9. Snitterfield tightened things up with the ball adding further wickets; Currall dismissing top scorer Thornton with a mid-wicket catch by Wyllie and Richards claimed another removing the leg stump. The game was poised for a close finish with Ashorne needing just 30 from the last 6 overs but  Visser added to his Man of the Match debut with a fine spell of 4-0-13-1, supported well at the other end by Morris 5-0-28-2.

Snitterfield kept Ashorne down to 172-7 off their 40 overs, to secure victory.

Sunday 6th May 2007 - Norton Lindsey - Away

Norton Lindsey 183 for 7 - Snitterfield 181 all out

Snitterfield come close to pulling of a shock victory against local rivals Norton Lindsey on Sunday, in the second match of the season. In blustery conditions Snitterfield lost the toss and were put into bat against a strong Norton side featuring 4 of their league side. The innings started well with regular opener Ben Leefe coming together for the first time with 16yr old Dan Wood, who was making his first appearance for the Snipes. The pair put on 34 off the opening 8 overs before Wood was removed by a smart low catch at midwicket for 3 off the bowling of Maundrel, whose spell finished with excellent figures of 5 overs 1-6. Next man in Austin 'Auz' Booth faired little better scoring 1 before playing on to Andrews. Things got worse for the Snipes as the best batsman Andy Currall was also bowled by Andrews who finished with 3-29.

The only bright spark at this point was Leefe who was batting solidly at the other end. There was a mini revival with the middle order of Kumarasinghe, Jackson and skipper Wyllie scoring 9, 8 and 13 respectively. Club chairman Hillier continued his stuttering start to the season with 1 and things got worse as he ran out opener Leefe for 62. This could put his future selection in doubt (but as he is the only key holder to the kit cupboard, he'll probably survive). Thankfully the last three added 40 runs with Beesley 11, Hartwell 4 and a quick fire 25 from MacKay leaving Norton chasing a tricky 181 to win. Special mention to young bowler Charlie Ashby who bowled very well taking 2-36 off his 8 overs.

The Snitterfield attack got off to a good start with openers Wyllie 4-0-14-0 and Currall 8-0-45-1. The change at Wyllie's end brought immediate results with young Wood picking up a wicket with his second ball caught in the deep by Jackson. Wood finished with 1-27. Good middle spells from Hillier, Hartwell and Booth kept the Snipes in the match each taking one wicket before a second from MacKay (2-25) reduced the home side to 141 for 7. It was a big ask and in the end the Norton tail saw them home in the gloom with 4 overs to spare.

Snitterfield are away next week to Harbourne

Sunday 29th April 2007 - Bearley - Home

Snitterfield 103 all out - Bearley 252 for 6

All of Snitterfield's efforts in the nets and fielding practice disappeared in a puff as they were well beaten by local rivals Bearley, in the season's opener.

Bearley won the toss and elected to bat first. Snitterfield struggled to find form with the ball and in the field, where mis-fields and fumbles were the order of the day. MacKay, Booth and Hillier claimed a wicket apiece but at a high price. Skipper Wyllie 3 for 43 off 7 was by far the best of a wayward Snitterfield attack. The visitor's finishing on 252 .

Things improved little with the bat. Lamb 28, Booth 19 and Jackson 19 were the only bright performances as the rest of the order managed no more than a string of binary code comprising 4 '0s' and 4 '1s'. Green and Harris were the best of a very solid Bearley attack that cleaned out Snitterfield for a lowly 103.
